What is an Anaesthetist?

Anaesthetists have a detailed understanding of physiology, biochemistry and physics, supported by extensive training in the use of some of the most advanced monitoring equipment in medicine. During a standard anaesthetic, they rely on multiple electronic monitors to track essential body functions in real time. Advanced monitoring can also provide detailed information about cardiac function, circulation and respiratory status.

They are also highly experienced in managing drug interactions, which are inherent to modern anaesthetic practice. Anaesthetists use these interactions deliberately and carefully to support safe and effective care. More complex are interactions between anaesthetic agents and a patient’s existing prescription medications. These interactions can pose significant risks during anaesthesia, and it is the anaesthetist’s responsibility to identify, anticipate, and manage them before they result in harm.

Their areas of expertise include:

  • Anaesthesia for Breast and Endocrine Surgery
  • Anaesthesia for Ear, Nose and Throat, and Head and Neck Surgery
  • Management of Burns and Sepsis
  • Management of Difficult Airways
  • Neurosurgical Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
  • Teaching of Techniques of Percutaneous Tracheostomy
  • The Kidney in Critical Illness
  • Ventilation of the Lungs

How Anaesthetists contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded insight that assists lawyers, insurers, regulators and courts to understand how anaesthetic care was planned, delivered, and managed, and how it may relate to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal anaesthetists provide:

  • File reviews involving medical records, anaesthetic charts, monitoring data, and peri-operative documentation
  • Expert advisory input on whether anaesthetic care aligned with accepted standards at the time, including risk, consent, monitoring, medication use, and management of complications
  • Independent Medical Examinations in select matters where anaesthetic-related injury or outcome is central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where anaesthetic events have contributed to ongoing functional limitation
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters, or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings, or court
  • Specialist anaesthetic opinion in matters involving catastrophic injury or complex peri-operative events
