How Dental Surgeons contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded insight that assists lawyers, insurers, regulators, and courts in understanding dental and oral health conditions, how treatment was planned and delivered, and how outcomes or complications may relate to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal dental surgeons provide:

  • File reviews involving dental records, clinical notes, imaging, treatment plans and consent documentation
  • Expert advisory input on whether dental assessment, treatment and follow-up aligned with accepted standards of practice at the time
  • Opinion on diagnosis, treatment sequencing, procedural technique and management of complications
  • Independent Medical Examinations in matters where dental injury, treatment outcome or ongoing impairment is central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where dental or maxillofacial conditions have contributed to functional limitation
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings or court
  • Specialist dental opinion in matters involving surgical procedures, complex restorative work or catastrophic oral and facial injury
