How Otolaryngologists contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded opinions and reports that assist lawyers, insurers, regulators, and courts to understand ear, nose and throat conditions, how they affect function and capacity, how treatment was assessed and managed, and how outcomes or complications may relate to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal ear, nose and throat surgeons provide:

  • File reviews involving medical records, imaging, audiology results, endoscopy findings, and treatment history
  • Expert advisory input on whether ENT assessment, surgical, or medical management aligned with accepted standards of practice at the time
  • Opinion on diagnosis, disease progression, treatment decision-making, and management of complications
  • Independent Medical Examinations in matters where ENT conditions, injury, or surgical outcomes are central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where hearing, balance, voice, swallowing, or airway function has been affected
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters, or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings, or court
  • Specialist ENT opinion in matters involving head and neck surgery, airway management, hearing loss, or catastrophic injury
