How General Physicians contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded opinions and reports that assist lawyers, insurers, regulators, and courts in understanding complex medical conditions, how they affect health and capacity, how care was assessed and managed, and how those factors may relate to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal general physicians provide:

  • File reviews involving medical records, investigation results, correspondence, and treatment history
  • Expert advisory input on whether the medical assessment, diagnosis, and management aligned with accepted standards of practice at the time
  • Opinion on diagnosis, disease progression, prognosis, and the interaction of multiple medical conditions
  • Independent Medical Examinations in matters where general medical conditions are central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where medical conditions have contributed to ongoing functional limitation
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters, or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings, or court
  • Specialist opinion in matters involving complex or multi-system medical presentations
