How Psychologists contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded insight that assists lawyers, insurers, regulators and courts to understand psychological functioning, how mental health symptoms affect behaviour, capacity and daily functioning, and how those factors may relate to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal psychologists provide:

  • File reviews involving medical records, psychological reports, treatment notes, and assessment history
  • Psychological assessment to evaluate mood, behaviour, cognition, and emotional functioning
  • Expert advisory input on diagnosis, symptom presentation, and consistency with reported history
  • Opinion on capacity, risk, functional impact, and treatment needs
  • Independent assessments in matters where psychological condition or impairment is central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where psychological conditions have contributed to ongoing functional limitation
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters, or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings, or court
