How Rheumatologists contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded insight that assists lawyers, insurers, regulators, and courts to understand rheumatological and autoimmune conditions, how joint and systemic disease affects function and capacity, and how assessment and management may relate to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal rheumatologists provide:

  • File reviews involving medical records, imaging, pathology results, functional assessments, and treatment history
  • Expert advisory input on whether rheumatological assessment, diagnosis, and management aligned with accepted standards of practice at the time
  • Opinion on diagnosis, disease activity, progression, flare patterns, and prognosis
  • Independent Medical Examinations in matters where rheumatological disease or injury is central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where joint, musculoskeletal, or systemic conditions have contributed to ongoing functional limitation
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters, or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings, or court
  • Specialist rheumatology opinion in matters involving inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, chronic pain, or catastrophic outcomes
