Sleep and Thoracic Physicians

What is a Sleep Physician?

A sleep physician has expertise in the diagnosis and management of clinical conditions that occur during sleep, that disturb sleep or that are affected by disturbances in the wake-sleep cycle. The physician will be skilled in the analysis and interpretation of comprehensive polysomnography, well-versed in emerging research, and in the management of a sleep laboratory.

How Sleep Physicians contribute to medicolegal matters

Their role is to offer objective, clinically grounded insight that assists lawyers, insurers, regulators and courts to understand sleep and thoracic conditions, how respiratory and sleep-related disorders have been assessed and managed, and how these conditions affect capacity, safety and long-term outcomes relevant to the issues in dispute.

Typically, medicolegal sleep and thoracic physicians provide:

  • File reviews involving medical records, sleep studies, pulmonary function tests, imaging, and treatment history
  • Expert advisory input on whether sleep and thoracic assessment, diagnosis, and management aligned with accepted standards of practice at the time
  • Opinion on diagnosis, disease progression, treatment adherence, and functional impact, including fatigue, alertness, and respiratory limitation
  • Independent Medical Examinations in matters where sleep or thoracic conditions are central to the issues being considered
  • Impairment reporting where sleep or thoracic disorders have contributed to ongoing functional limitation
  • Supplementary reports to clarify or expand opinion as new information or questions arise
  • Expert witness work in civil claims, regulatory matters, or inquests, including participation in conferences, hearings, or court
  • Specialist opinion in matters involving sleep apnoea, occupational safety, thoracic disease, or catastrophic respiratory outcomes
