What is a Neurologist?

A Neurologist specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of disease or impaired function of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles and autonomic nervous system. It also looks at the blood vessels that relate to these structures. A Neurologist specialises in the diagnosis and management of:

  • Disorders of nerve, muscle or neuromuscular junction, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and peripheral neuropathies
  • Various muscular dystrophies, congenital and acquired myopathies, inflammatory myopathies
  • Neuromuscular transmission disorders.
